He started as a CSA private in the Civil War. He was member of Company G, of the 22nd Georgia Regiment of Infantry, also known as the Fireside Defenders. He was given the rank of Second Sergeant in Spotslvania, Virginia in 1863.

The battles he was involved in included Manasasses and Gettysburg. He was wounded in the head at Po River, Virginia on May 10, 1864, and spent the rest of that year in the hospital. A few months after returning to his company, they surrendered at Appomattox in April of 1865.

After the war, he worked as carpenter in Rome, Georgia where he died from Pneumonia at age 80.

He is known for his memoirs, in which he detailed many of the events of his daily life as he fought in the civil war. He also composed civil war records of 19 the companies recruited in Rome, GA. A few of those records contain specific details of what happened to each soldier. One soldier was "sent to the hospital and lost." Another lost a sword valued at $5000.00. Many of the soldiers he named died in battles or from fever, some were captured and some were said to have surrendered at the end of the war.
He gives a short detail of the fate of each member of the Fireside Defenders in his very interesting "Muster Rolls".
