John Gideon Estes was born January 07, 1830 in Canon County, Tennessee1, and died February 14, 1873 in Marion County, Arkansas. He married Missouri Wood in 1850 in Marion County, Arkansas, daughter of Abram Wood and Miriam Williams.
He Enlisted in Company A of the 27th Arkansas Infantry on June 14th, 1862. He was detached to the salt-peter cave on October 25th, 1862. He was absent on detached duty February 28th, 1863. He later served in Company C of Harrell's Arkansas Cavalry, enlisting at Yellville on March 16th, 1863.
John's brother, Thomas J. Estes, writes in his pamphlet 'Early Days and War Times In North Arkansas':
'Then Colonel Mitchell, made up the 14th Arkansas regiment of infantry, in Marion county in which two of my brothers, John and Edward, and two brothers-in-law, Gideon Thompson and H. R. Hutchison, enlisted. Hy Hutchison and others were captured at Fort Hudson, I think, and were taken to Johnson's Island and kept in prison the last three years of the war. Brother Edward soon died and was buried by his comrades, near his home. I witnessed the solemn occasion. He also belonged to the army of the Lord and was a beginner in the ministry. Brother John and Gideon Thompson, both broken in health, only lived a few years and rejoiced as they were nearing the port to be with the great Captain of peace, love and mercy--not war and destruction.'
