PROMINENT SOLDIER RESIDENT IS DEAD

Following an accident at Soldier on Tuesday morning that village lost one of its most highly respected residents, Mr. Daniel F. Fike, just eighteen hours later and has brought sadness to many homes in this vicinity. Mr. Fike was at work unloading mine props from a car at the Soldier mines when, it is believed was taken with an epileptic fit, of which he has been subject for several years, and fell to the ground, a distance of nine feet. The accident occurred at about 7:30 and it was fully a half hour before the incident had become known.

Dr. W. H. Kelsea was at once summoned, gave all possible aid and had the sufferer removed to his home a short distance away. It is believed that he had alighted on his head and shoulders and had fractured the vertebra in his neck or had ruptured the spinal cord, for he was paralyzed from the neck down, although the heart action had not been affected and he conversed with his family during the day. Every possible attention was given to check his suffering and to prolong his life but without avail, the end coming at 1:20 o'clock Wednesday morning.

Mr. Fike was the oldest son of M. and Mrs. John Fike, deceased, of this place, and was born December 26, 1866 and at the time of his death was aged 48 years, 5 months and 27 days.

In early manhood he was united in marriage with Miss Sarah Foltz who survives with their six children; Mrs. Wm. Allen of Dubois, Glenn of Soldier, Harry, Sadie, Clair and Lester at home. Also surviving are two brothers and three sisters: C.W. Fike of Strattonville, Samuel of this place, Mrs. Wm. Young of Wrothville, Mrs. E. A. Hamilton of Philadelphia and Mrs. E. W. Childs of DuBois.

The deceased was a man of gentle disposition, home-loving and cheerful and his devotion to his family and kindness to everybody will long linger as a fragrant memory in his home and community. During the past ten years he has been employed with the R. & P. Coal Co. at Soldier and a favorite among his fellow workmen. He was a member of the Red Men Lodge in Reynoldsville. The funeral services will be conducted in the home at 2 o'clock this afternoon and interment made in the new cemetery at this place. Rev. J. B. Smith, of the Baptist Church of this place, will officiate.
