William Alguire, custodian of the town hall and opera house for the past 22 years and retired Police Officer, nearly a lifelong resident of Massena, died Tuesday morning, February 1, 1927, at 6:10 'clock at his home, 281 Main Street, aged 70 years. Death followed a period of about four years of failing health.

He was born at Osnabruck Center, ON, on October 22, 1856, son of George and Marion Andrew Alguire. He came to Massena as a young man and for nine summers was employed as cheesemaker by the late J. L. Hyde in the Racket River factory.

On April 5, 1892, Mr. Alguire figured in an experience that cost the life of one man and nearly cost him his. He and the late David R. Farlinger were in a boat trying to save a large jam of logs in the Grasse River. In those days logs drives came as far as Massena, to the sawmill of the Massena Mill company. Their boat was caught in the jam, and they were thrown into the water and carried over the dam. Mr. Algurie clung to the boat and was saved, but his companion was drowned.

His marriage to Miss Esther Canton took place at Norfolk on October 22,1876, his birthday. They quietly celebrated their golden wedding anniversary last October. She survives with one daughter, Mrs. Irving J. O'Brien, of Massena, two sisters, Mrs. Eli Prieur of Rochester, and Mrs. N. Enderebee, of Canton; and one brother, Jacob Alguire, of Canton. Another sister, Mrs. Marion Alguire Nichols, died in Louisville last week Friday.

The funeral will be held this Thursday, morning at 10:00 o'clock from the home, Rev. Norman McLellan, an old friend, officiating.
