As a result of the mess the California justice system and the state parole board made of the murderer's conviction, there is now a law in California that allows the governor to override a parole recommendation made by the parole board.

The Fain case also influenced the passage of tougher sentencing laws in California. As of November 1978, the minimum sentence for first-degree murder with aggravated circumstances, such as rape or lying in wait, is death or life imprisonment without parole.

The passage of time has removed Mark Ulrich's murder and William Archie Fain's murder conviction from the public's memory. The same will happen to the crimes of people like Charles Manson, Scott Peterson, Timothy McVeigh, and Jodi Arias; but, unfortunately, there will be new ones to take their place.
