MRS. E. J. BLUE

Eliza J. Blue was born in Noble county, Ohio, February 22nd, 1840. She was the daughter of Langdon and Martha Gookin and was one of nine children, three brothers of whom survive her, Clark, of Benton township, Thomas, of Chariton, and Orthillo, of Benton township, Lucas county.

She came with her parents to Lee county, Iowa, when about thirteen years of age and resided there a short time and then came to Lucas county and has resided her since that time. She was married to Andrew J. Blue on February 9th, 1859, and to this union were born five children, William, George S., Walter L., Martha and Bessie Kells, all of whom survive her excepting Martha, who died in infancy. Her husband, Andrew J. Blue, died June 18th, 1872. She was again married to Absalom Blue in the year 1876 and to this union were born two children, Laura Clark, of Creston, and Gertie Sims, of Russell.

She united with the United Evangelical church a number of years ago, of which she has been a faithful member up to the time of her death, which occurred at her home, three miles south of Russell, on January 20th, 1913, after a severe illness of ten days with pneumonia, terminating in heart trouble. She suffered intensely at times. Although delirious at times, she became conscious several hours before her death and remainded so until nearly the last moment.

Her children all being present with her, she called them one by one by name, and as she took one by one by the hand she lovingly told them to look to Jesus and said; "I will be waiting for you in that better land. Weep not for me, I am going home. She will be greatly missed by her friends to whom she was ever loving and kind.

The funeral services were held at the old home, three miles south of Russell, on Thursday at 11 a.m., conducted by Rev. F. J. Young. The children were all present; also two of the brothers, Clark and Thomas Gookin. Orthillo Gookin was confined to his home in Benton township on account of illness. That the deceased was held in high esteem was shown by the many kind words of praise and sympathy from those who knew her best, and the large attendance at the funeral.

Interment was in the Ragtown cemetery, four miles southwest of Russell. Pall bearers were selected from the neighborhood friends. They were Edward Hellyer, Grant LeFevre, Eugene McKinley, O. H. Evans, Frank Cook and Harry Parker.
