Chemist and inventor. Born in Rouen, France, he initially studied medicine, but then travelled to Germany and devoted himself to chemistry. He settled in England in 1843 and anglicised his name to Dr. Normandy. He patented several inventions including indelible dyes and inks (1839), a process for hardening soap (1841), and a very successful aparatus for distilling sea water for drinking (1851). He was elected Fellow of the Chemical Society in 1854. He gave evidence before a House of Commons committee on the adulteration of food in 1855.
