Ira was the son of Ira Chase and his wife, Lucy Hannah Taylor Chase. Ira Sr. died in Indiana before 1850.

Ira W. Chase enlisted 29 August 1864 in Company G, 189th Regiment, New York Infantry. He was discharged 29 June 1865.

Ira Chase death notice, Portage (Wisconsin) Daily Democrat, 31 December 1894, page 2. -- Saturday afternoon as Ira Chase, who is slightly deaf, was walking into Lodi along the C. & N.W. tracks, the passenger from Chicago struck him, death resulting instantly. He was a widower and resided three miles south of Lodi with his brother.
