Korean War Veteran Was Longtime Pastor

Billy Carl Rice, 79, died on Wednesday, July 15, 2009, surrounded by many of his family members.

Born on May 20, 1930, in Wittensville, Ky., (a certified Kentucky Colonel), Bill graduated salutatorian from Oil Springs High School in Kentucky, served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict, and graduated from Wheaton College in Illinois before spending the next 48 years of his life in service for the Lord Jesus Christ.

Beginning in 1961, Bill ministered in churches in Illinois, Michigan, Ohio and South Carolina. He pastored Fellowship Baptist Church in Richmond, Va., and Southgate Baptist Church in Augusta, Ga.

In his "retirement" years, he had served as the Minister to Senior Adults at Grace Baptist Church in Chattanooga where he also sang in the church choir and in a men's group. He has also served as a chaplain and bus driver for Creekside Retirement Center.

He was predeceased by his parents, Charley and Wannie Mae Rice; brother, Virgil; and his sisters, Loutisha, Grace, Venice and Emily.

Bill is survived by his wife of 52 years, Joanna Rice; his children, Jim and Linda Bailey, of Grayson, Ga., R.L. and Lauri Moore, of Hendersonville, N.C., Robb and Nina Rice, of Suffield, Ct., and Bill and Julie Rice, of Lynchburg, Va.; and his grandchildren, Allan and Kyle Bailey, Christian, Jordan, and Micah Moore, Rob, Ryan, Kellen, Wiley and Braeden Rice, and Katie, Erin, Emily, Billy and Riley Rice. Additionally, Bill is survived by his siblings Jim Rice, of Sabina, Ohio, Charley (Bug) Rice, of Wittensville, Ky., Wilbur (Alice) Rice, of Sydney, Ohio, Betty Blair, of Louisa, Ky., and his in-laws, Mary Lloys Himes, of Chattanooga, Walt and Libby Handford, of Greenville, S.C., Don and Jessie Sandberg, of Rossville, and Roger and Joy Martin, of Ringgold, Ga.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 18, at Grace Baptist Church, 7815 Shallowford Road, Chattanooga with Pastor Steve Euler, Dr. Walt Handford, Dr. Roger Martin and the Rev. Roger Parks presiding.

Graveside services will be held at 2:30 p.m. CDT at the Bill Rice Ranch in Murfreesboro, Tn.
