Thomas McClain was a very early settler (late 1700's) of Claiborne County, Tennessee, arriving before the creation of the state and county. Using the 1830 and 1840 census to determine his birth year, Thomas was born between 1761 and 1770. The 1830 census was the earliest available census for East Tennessee. Thomas purchased a large section of land from the Henderson Land Company and built a large rock house on the property. It is said that he and his wife stayed in a cave directly north of where the house was built. There is a rock marker in the Ellison-McClain Cemetery that lists "Elsabth McClain (born 1767, died 1827)" which is probably Thomas' first wife. His second wife was Susan Crutchfield, daughter of Joshua Crutchfield. The house that Thomas McClain built is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. (Source: "Speedwell through 200 years" By Bonnie Page). The house is still in excellent condition and is inhabited.
