TERRE HAUTE — A child was killed Thursday evening near the Miss Softball America ball park in southern Vigo County.

Vigo County Sheriff's Department officials said two children were playing on a stack of logs near the ball diamonds when a large log rolled over on one of the children. The child was killed in the incident.

Police were not releasing the names or ages of the children as of late Thursday evening pending notification of family.

The Honey Creek Fire Department, Transcare and the Vigo County Sheriff's Department all responded to the incident, which took place about 6:30 p.m. Thursday evening.

Child's death ‘a very tragic accident'

TERRE HAUTE — Ten-year-old Josh Lee Combs liked to bowl, fish, play basketball and Little League.

A former Cub Scout, he enjoyed Nintendo DS and collected Pokémon. He liked to help his dad, Marty Combs, at the radio station where he worked.

On Thursday, Josh Combs' life was tragically cut short in an accident at a sawmill near the Miss Softball America complex in southern Vigo County.

Combs and another boy had been playing on a stack of logs when one of the logs became dislodged and rolled over the 10-year-old, who would have been a fifth-grader at Rio Grande Elementary. The other boy was able to jump off the pile in time to avoid the log, which Vigo County Sheriff Jon Marvel said weighed several thousand pounds.

"It was a very tragic accident," Marvel said Friday.

The accident occurred on the property of Kirkham Hardwoods, a sawmill adjacent to and south of the ballpark.

According to Marvel, the boys left the ballpark, went through a wooded treeline and onto the sawmill property, which does have no-trespassing signs. There was no fence between the ballpark and sawmill property, Marvel said.

Scott Kyrouac, the attorney for Miss Softball America, on Friday said, "It's a very tragic accident. It's under investigation. Our sympathy goes out to the family and to loved ones."

Combs' sister plays softball at the ballpark.

The Miss Softball America board met Friday evening to discuss what had happened, and the board is working on a fund-raising effort for the family and possible memorial. "We'd like to do something nice for the family in his memory," Kyrouac said.

The MSA board wants Combs' family involved in whatever it decides to do "because they are a part of our [MSA] family," said Mike Telezyn, MSA board vice president.

Those who are part of the MSA program are very concerned about what happened. "We're all very sad," Kyrouac said.

There are differing reports about how frequently youths might leave the softball complex and go over to the sawmill property.

Percy Mossbarger, owner of Kirkham Hardwoods Inc., said, "I have seen children back there one time in 35 years playing on the logs, beside last night."

Mossbarger added, "We should pray for the family."

Kyrouac, who noted that the lumber mill cannot be seen from the ballpark, stated, "I don't know that to be a fact that kids go back there all the time. I don't think that happens."

According to the youth who was with Combs, the boys went to the sawmill property even though they had been told not to by their parents, according to a Vigo County sheriff's Department report.

The report indicated that "throughout the season, several of the younger children will go behind the ballpark where they have a trail and go onto the property of the sawmill. The land is posted no trespassing and the children have all been told to stay off the property and numerous times parents have caught the children back on the property."

Kyrouac said the board is going to do its own investigation "and see what can be done."

Josh Combs is survived by his parents, Marty ‘Party Marty' Combs and Shellie Ellis Combs; one brother, Brandon; two sisters, Addie and Kelly; and other relatives. A full obituary is on page A2 of today's paper.
