Lester and Ruth Rupard had one son, Dennis William Rupard, who was killed in a car
accident on July 11. 1961, never married. Dennis fathered a son by Shelbie Jean "Judy"
Tatum whose name was James William Rupard, called Jimmy, who was born two moths
after Dennis was killed in the car accident. Lester and Ruth adopted Jimmy and raised him
as their son, although he was their grandson. Judy Tatum later married Dennis's cousin,
Dayton Lynn Rupard, son of Carl James and Louise Zada Shook Rupard.
Lester and Ruth Rupard were Seventh Day Adventists and their home farm was located
behind the glove mill in Banner Elk, Avery Co., NC. On September 25, 1978, after a family
argument, Jimmy shot and killed Ruth in the home and then went to the field where Lester
was working and shot and killed him. Lester was my mother's first cousin.
