Mrs. Walter John Burtis

Mrs. Walter John Burtis (Winifred Jane Brown) died Wednesday in Kansas City, Mo., where she had been making her home with a daughter, Mrs. E. E. Howard.
Mrs. Burtis, 99, was born in 1868 In Oskaloosa, Iowa, and came to Kansas with her parents in a covered wagon. She grew up in a prairie home where her parents established the first nursery in the state.
She attended the Wilson County College and later Kansas State University, marrying Walter John Burtis, whom she had met at the then Kansas State College of Agriculture and Applied Sciences. With her husband she engaged in farming in Wilson and Riley Counties. After retirement the couple made their home in Manhattan.
Besides the daughter in Kansas City, Mrs. Burtis is survived by one son, Orville D. Burtis of Manhattan; two other daughters, Mrs. H. B. Bayer of Manhattan and Mrs. Andrew Rice of Berkeley, Calif., 13 grandchildren and 40 great-grandchildren.
Mr. Burtis, her husband, died in 1953 and a daughter, Margaret, in 1952.
She had been active in rural and Manhattan community life, helping to organize and establish the Agricultural Extension Homemaker Clubs and a rural church in her farm community. She had been a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Order of Eastern Star, the First Congregational Church of Manhattan, and the Rock Hill Club.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday in the Manhattan Congregational Church with interment in Sunset Cemetery.
The Newcomer Funeral Home of Kansas City is in charge of arrangements.
The Rev. Julian Johnson will officiate at the memorial service Monday. Friends of Mrs. Burtis and her family wishing to call will find the relatives in Pioneer Hall of the church at 7:30 Sunday evening.
A memorial fund in Mrs. Burtis’ name has been established by the family for the First Congregational Church.
