Enlisted with either the 35th or 41st Ohio National Guard on 1 June 1863 with these two units combined to make up the 153d Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment on 10 May 1864 which served to reinforce Federal units guarding the railroad and Union garrisons along the Potomac River. The unit mustered out on 9 Sep 1864 at Camp Dennison, Ohio.

married in 1867 with one daughter: Ada Carlotta Belt 1869–1950.
