EMPORIA -- Al Locke, 82, Emporia, died Friday, July 9, 1999, at an Emporia nursing home.

Mr. Locke was coordinator of security and safety at Emporia State University for several years until 1976. He was coordinator of inventory at the school from 1976 until he retired in 1978. He also taught classes in the industrial arts department at the school, and he was an assistant professor. He earlier had been Lyon County undersheriff, and he served as sheriff from 1950 to 1955.

He later worked for the Kansas Peace Officers Association and the Kansas Turnpike Authority. He took a position as traffic officer at Kansas State Teachers College in Emporia in 1959. He served in the Military Police in the Army during World War II, and was a body guard for Gen. Dwight Eisenhower in Africa. He also served in the Emporia Police Department in 1938.

He was born Aug. 7, 1916, at Lamar, Colo., the son of Ira A. and Veta Hight Locke. He graduated from Hutchinson High SChool and he earned a master's degree at the former Kansas State Teacher's College. Mr. Locke was the 1936 Kansas light heavy-weight boxing champion, the state Golden Gloves champion in 1936 and 1937 in light heavy- weight champion. He taught boxing and he was active in football, track and diving. Mr. Locke was a member of Ball-McColm Post No. 5 of the American Legion in Emporia, the Kansas Peace Officers Association where he served as state vice-president, and president in 1952.

He was married to Elizabeth A. Stutsman on Nov. 14, 1938. She died Jan. 22, 1979.

No immediate family members survive.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home in Emporia.

Burial with graveside military services conducted by Post No. 5 of the American Legion and the Lowry-Funston Post No. 1980 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars will be at Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Emporia.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Emporia State University Endowment Association and sent in care of the funeral home.
