Son of John C. and Elizabeth (Huston) Gilbert; Came to Johnson County, Missouri, with his father and siblings (Sarah Elizabeth, Walter Huston, and William A.) about 1854. Enlisted Aug.1, 1862 at Rose Hill, Missouri, as a Private, Co.D, 16th Missouri Infantry, Second Brigade (Confederate). Was paroled at Shreveport, Louisiana, June 8, 1865. Married(1st) Jane Elizabeth Helms, May 26, 1861(She died Sept. 20 1889);(2nd) Lucy Sanders in 1893. Came to St. Clair County after the war and settled on Bear Creek (along with his sister, Sarah Elizabeth Gilbert, and her son, Thomas Jackson Gilbert)
