Enlisted as a Private in Co. D, 102nd OVI, on 29 July 1862 at the age of 18. Was a member of a detachment sent on 24 September 1864 to relieve Ft. Henderson in Athens, AL, which was under siege by rebel cavalry commanded by CSA Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest. The detachment was fighting to gain the fort, and within sight of it, when the fort was unexpectedly surrendered. Forrest then forced the relief detachment to surrender as well. Most of those captured, and likely Pvt. Sloane, were sent to Cahaba Prison. Pvt. Sloane was exchanged on 22 April 1865 and survived the explosion and sinking of the steamer "Sultana" on 27 April 1865. He was mustered out at Columbus, OH, on 6 June 1865.

His father Is William Sloane born 1824 Jefferson, Ohio. His mother is Elizabeth Ann Williams born Richland, Ohio.
