Daughter of Ross C. and Edna Babbitt Mertz.
Mary attended grade school and high school in Potwin, Kansas. She received a B.S. in Administration with an accounting major from Kansas State University in 1951.
In 1954 she married James H. Farrar.
Mary was a long time volunteer with the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. She was a past president and long time member of the Martha Jefferson Hospital Auxiliary. Mary was an active member of First Baptist Church and had served on numerous church committees. She also belonged to several sewing groups and bridge groups. Mary's hobbies included traveling, reading, sewing, handwork, and playing bridge.
She is survived by her four children, Ken Farrar and his wife, Joette, of Christiansburg, Virginia, Barbara Compton and her husband, Gary, of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Patty Barrett and her husband, Jon, of Leesburg, Virginia, and Dan Farrar and his wife, Michele, of Palm Coast, Florida; six grandsons, Dusty Compton and his wife, Amber, Kevin Compton, Nathan Farrar, Nelson Farrar, Connor Barrett, and Brendan Barrett; two brothers, Den Mertz and his wife, Cathy, of Prairie Village, Kansas, and Jack Mertz of Groveland, Florida; and four nieces and three nephews.
A memorial service was held Monday, July 27, 2009, at the First Baptist Church of Charlottesville with the Reverend Leon Castle officiating.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society and to the First Baptist Church Library Fund, First Baptist Church, 735 Park Street, Charlottesville, VA 22902.
