Chester Lamont Epling, 75, Topeka, died Thursday, Aug. 26, 1999, in his home.

Mr. Epling had been employed by the Union Pacific Railroad, Rock Island Railroad, and the Kansas Power and Light Co., all in Topeka. He worked for the U.S. Postal Supply Center in Topeka for more than 30 years before he retired Oct. 1, 1985. He also had farmed in eastern Kansas prior to World War II. He served in the Army in the European Theater during World War II. He was decorated with the Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal and two Bronze Service Stars.

He was born Sept. 27, 1923, in Columbus City, Iowa, the son of Lester Earl and Celia Esther Lewis Epling. He moved to Topeka in 1955. He also had lived in the winters in New Braunfels, Texas.

Mr. Epling was a former member of Philip Billard Post No. 1650 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Topeka North Post No. 400 of the American Legion, Moose Lodge No. 555, Seaman Southern Baptist Church and the Retired Postal supply Center Workers, all of Topeka.

He married Evelyn Anna Hodge on May 12, 1942, in Holton. She preceded him in death May 30, 1986. He married Virginia O. Moore on Dec. 26, 1995, in Topeka. She survives.

Other survivors include three daughters, Karen Shenck, Shirley Krallman and Diana Cowing, all of Topeka; a stepdaughter, Roma Huhs, Auburn; three stepsons, William Moore, Tecumseh, and Jesse Lee Moore and Richard Moore, both of Topeka; a sister, Myrtle Yiengst, Cayle, Okla.; a brother, Gene Epling, Henderson, Nav.; seven grandchildren; 12 stepgrandchildren; six great- grandchildren; 28 stepgreat- grandchildren; and one stepgreat-great-grandchild.

Mr. Epling was preceded in death by a great-granddaughter, Peyton Krallman, on Feb. 10, 1998.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Davidson Funeral Home.

Burial will be in Circleville Cemetery in Circleville.

Mr. Epling will lie in state from noon to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home, where relatives and friends will meet from 4 to 5:30 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to Midland Hospice and sent in care of the funeralhome.
