After his father, Henry Hill, died unexpectedly, the 3 year old John F. Hill went to live with his grandparents. He was educated by them, and attended a log cabin school. After his grandfather's death, John took up farming. He went to Cedar Co, Iowa in 1857, and in 1860 he moved to Johnson Co, Iowa. On October 02, 1861, he enlisted at Shueyville as a Sergeant in Capt. William H. Shuey's Co. "F" 14th Regt. Iowa Infantry Vols. John fought in Tennessee and Shiloh, Mississippi, and finally at Pleasant Hill, LA during the Civil War. He mustered out on 8 Nov 1864. John was discharged on November 08, 1864 at Davenport, Iowa, and he returned to Johnson Co, Iowa.
