In 1889, they moved to Dufur. With John McHaley and John Doyle, Klinger brought the first thresher to the area. It was a Sweepstakes model and swept the chaff from the wheat.
Louis was an expert hunter and fisherman who also enjoyed camping. He was elected mayor of Dufur twice, but refused further political honors because they might interfere with his camping. Klinger was a member of the Odd Fellows and the Christian Church. Louie Klinger died on August 16, 1915, and was buried at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery near Dufur.
