Death Calls Mrs. John Ashley, 77, Early Settler

Dies of Paralysis at Home in Buffalo Township.

Mrs. John H. Ashley, one of the earliest settlers of Cloud county, died at 6:30 this morning at the farm in Buffalo township where she and her husband settled in 1879. Her death was the result of a stroke of paralysis and she had been ill about six weeks. She was 77 years of age.

Mrs. Ashley was born in Cass County, Mich., Oct. 23, 1845. In 1865 in Mason county, Mich., she married John Ashley, and in 1879 they came west, settling on the farm where Mrs. Ashley died. When they first came thru to Concordia, Mr. Ashley chartered a car, shipping a team of horses and a year's supply of provisions and timber, with which they built their first home. They met with many reverses in the early days, and in the prairie fire of 1880 their barn was burned with a year's supply of corn.

Mrs. Ashley was always active in church work, and was life president of the Free Baptist Mission Society of the Free Baptist church of Buffalo township. She was also a member of the W.R.C. of Concordia.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Ashley is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Lettie M. Judd of Oakland, Cal., and Mrs. Mary L. Chestnut of Superior, Neb.; two sons, William S. Ashley of Burlington, Iowa and Frank W. Ashley who lives on the Ashley farm; two brothers, George and John Stevens of Michigan and seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon from the home.
