John and Sarah were parents to known children, daughters; Susan, Willie, and Annie, and sons; Frank, James, George, Gabe, Jack, and Thomas. Four of their sons served with the Texas Rangers, including James, who died in the line of duty of gunshot wounds in Sabine County in 1887. That same year Sarah passed away leaving John to care for their younger children. John continued to live at the family homestead until his death on May 29, 1906, at the age of 76.
John was a veteran of the civil war and a charter member of the Rising Star Masonic Lodge No 429, AF, AM, Center Point, Texas, founded on the 5th of January 1875.
