OBITUARY
James Harvey Ross
Dear Brethern and Sisters:
Death has again visited our flock a solemn warning to us all to ever be ready to meet his summons. Bro. James Harvey Ross was born in Giles County, Tennessee, July 25th, 1836. His parents died while he was quite young, and he was apprenticed to one Mr. Howell, a tanner, afterward came to Arkansas and remained there until about 16 years of age, when he came with his Uncle to Navarro County, Texas, near Corsicana, where remained until January 13, 1889, when God took him to himself.

He was married to Miss Eucebia Crabb. He leaves a wife and seven children to mourn his loss: but weep not for your loss is his eternal gain. It can truthfully be said a good man has fallen.

Brother Ross, in 1879, joined the Church of Christ at Bethsada near Corsicana and for ten years up to his death remained a faithful and earnest Christian, ever ready to give a reason of the hope that was in him. Though in his last days he was a great sufferer, he never murmered or complained at his lot but ever hoped and trusted in our Lord and Redeemer.

Adopted by Bethsada Church on Saturday before the fourth Lord's Day in March 1889 A. D.

James Harvey Ross came to Pope County, Arkansas shortly after 1840 with his parents, Robert and Mary Lucinda Waggoner Ross and his sister, Mary Lucinda Ross. It is believed that Robert was the son of Robert and Mary Dickey Ross. James was born July 25, 1836 in Giles County, Tennessee. His sister was born December 26, 1839 in Tennessee. Their father must have died shortly after moving to Pope County because on December 2, 1843, Mary Ross, the widow of Robert Ross, married James McCoy also of Pope County. They lived on McCoy Creek between the settlements of Scottsville and Dover. Then Mary must have died prior to 1850 for by 1850 both children were boarded out. James was living with the A.W. Peacock family in Johnson County, Arkansas and Mary Lucinda was living with the Theron Harvey Ross family of Pope County. The graves of James´ parents are unlocated. James obituary states that he was orphaned young and apprenticed to a tanner and sent to Navarro County, Texas with an uncle. James fought for Texas, CSA during the Civil War as a 4th Corporal in Beat #7 in Navarro County's 19th Brigade, CSA under Capt. L. D. McConnico. According to his grandson, he died of "consumption" ( an archaic name for pulmonary tuberculosis ) he contracted during the War. On July 5, 1865, in Corsicana, he married Miss Eucebia Phoebe Drane Crabb, daughter of Jeremiah Crabb, a prominent Navarro County citizen. James died January 13, 1899 in Corsicana, Texas and is buried in Cosgrove Cemetery. He was a member of the Bethesda Church of Christ for ten years prior to his death. His grandson, Robert Ross, remembered him as a "quiet and gentle man."

The children of James Harvey and Eucebia Ross were:
Robert Jeremiah Ross, 1866-1913
Elisha Crabb Ross, 1868-1896
James Hosea Ross, 1869-1925
Benjamin Franklin Ross, 1871-1926
Mary Catherine Ross, 1873-1917
William Newton Ross, 1875-1915
Hardy Ernest Ross, 1878-1946
