TUESDAY AFTERNOON
Carl D. Benson, 54 years old, an Apache business man for 23 years, died unexpectedly at a service station 6 miles south of Carnegie at about 3 p.m Tuesday. Death was attributed to a heart attack.
Mr. Benson, with Vic Christenson, manager of Benson & Malone's farm equipment and tractor department, had gone to the Carnegie area to check up on a combine the firm had sold. He became ill and Mr. Christensen drove him to the service station nearby, where he died before the arrival of a doctor who had been summoned.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Methodist church at 10 o'clock this (friday) morning by Rev. Fred Stolz, the pastor. Burial will be in Fairview cemetery with the Crews Funeral Home in charge. The Body will lie in state at the Crews Funeral Home until the funeral hour. Business houses will be closed from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.
Active pallbearers will be nephews of the deceased: Carl Malone jr., William Malone, Edward Malone, Donald Malone, Walter Benson Malone and Knox L. Malone, all of Fletcher and Claude Malone and Maurice Goodman.
Honorary bearers will be the following: Kenneth Shafer, Riley Constant, Pete Bailey, Ernest Miller, Clay Williams, Clyde Smallwood, Roy Duncan, Jerry Van, Lew Wilson and M.T. Wilhite. All are employees of the Benson & Malone firm, except Mr. Wilhite, and he was an employe for many years.
Mr. Benson was born at Oneida, Ill., November 17, 1897. He was a graduate of the University of Chicago and following his graduation was a salesman in Chicago for the Mack Truck company. He was married to Miss Bess Malone in Apache December 31, 1928 and six months later bought an interest in Malone Motor company, Ford dealers here, from his brother-in-law, C.E. Malone. The firm name being changed at that time to Benson & Malone.
The deceased was active in the affairs of the Methodist church and for many years had been a steward and treasurer of the church. He served 10 years as a member of the school board and was a member of the Masonic lodge and the Rotary club.
Surviving him are his wife, his mother, Mrs. Emma Benson of Chicago, Ill.; two brothers, Edwin of Chicago and Roy of Alaska; and two sisters, Mrs. C.N. Crewdson and Miss Alta Benson, both of Chicago.
