WATERTOWN, N.Y. — Harry W. Gerstenschlager, 85, of Hillcrest Avenue, passed away peacefully Tuesday evening at Carthage Area Hospital SNU after a long illness.

Calling hours will be held 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 16, at Cummings Funeral Service, Inc., 214 Sterling St. The funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, July 17, at the funeral home. Burial will follow in North Watertown Cemetery with military honors.

Born Jan. 15, 1924, in Watertown, to Harry and Mabel Gerstenschlager, he was a veteran of World War II, serving in France and Germany.

Upon his return he drove for Yellow Cab for several years and eventually owned and operated his own cab. Later, Harry became a general contractor, working for many area businesses and residential customers.

Mr. Gerstenschlager was well-known and well-liked by all who knew him. He was always a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. The times he shared with his family were the most meaningful.

Harry was an avid horse racing fan and enjoyed playing the lottery.

He married Betty J. Altmire in 1960. His first marriage to Ruby O'Dette ended in divorce.

Besides his wife, Betty, he is survived by his children, Steven and Bonnie Gerstenschlager, Brownville, Carol and Robert Lynch, Phoenix, Ariz., Ann Cousins, Maryville, Tenn., Linda Reichert, Texas, Michael and Sue Altmire, Watertown, Steven and Theresia Selley, Copenhagen, Joe and Dawn Gerstenschlager, Brownville, Patricia and Scott Beattie, Mannsville, and Brianna Gerstenschlager, at home; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and his sisters, Betty Frear, Watertown, and Hilda Fitzgerald, Glen Park.

A son, David Gerstenschlager, died in November 2004
