Deceased Name: Frederick H. Abbott Jr.
HOLLISTON - Frederick H. Abbott Jr., 89, of Holliston, died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2008, at U Mass Memorial Hospital in Worcester.
He was the husband of Arlene T. (Towne) Abbott.
Born in Framingham, the son of the late Frederick H. and Florence (Hemenway) Abbott, he had been a resident of Framing-ham before moving to Holliston in 1952. Mr. Abbott was a graduate of Framingham High School, Class of 1935.
He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran serving in the European Theatre.
Mr. Abbott was general transportation manager at the former Draper Corp. in Hopedale and vice president and general manager of the former Grafton-Upton Railroad. He had worked for Draper Corp. for more than 30 years before his retirement in 1979.
An accomplished clarinet and saxophone player, he gave private lessons to students for more than 40 years. He was a longtime member of the First Congregational Church in Holliston, where in the 1970s he served as moderator of the church. Mr. Abbott was a former chairman of the Holliston Finance Committee and was an avid genealogist.
He was past master and a 50-year member of the Alpha Lodge of Masons AF & AM of Framingham, a member of the Boston Scottish Rite and Consistory and of the Aleppo Temple of Shriners in Wilmington, where he was a former member of the Aleppo Temple Brass Band.
He was an active supporter and contributor to the Wayside Youth & Family Support Network and in July 2007, he was honored at the ground-breaking ceremony for the new Wayside Campus in Framingham, with a road named in his honor at the entrance - the Frederick Abbott Way.
Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, Frederick H. Abbott III of Uxbridge, David W. Abbott of Manchester, Maine, and two daughters, Janice A. Masi and her husband, Eric L., of Stow and Susan A. Bloodgood and her husband, Frederic, of Stockholm, N.J.; one brother, Raymond Abbott of Warwick, R.I.; two sisters, Phyllis Devine and Ruth Barlow, both of Framing-ham; eight grandsons, David Masi of New York City, Daniel Masi of Los Angeles, Tyler Masi of Stow, Christopher Abbott of Washington, D.C., Corey Abbott of Manchester, and Russell, Matthew and Travis Bloodgood, all of Stockholm; and many nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Elaine and William Abbott.
A funeral service with full military honors will be held Monday, Jan. 14, at 11 a.m., at First Congregational Church - Holliston, at 725 Washington St.
Burial will follow in Swan Dale Cemetery, Hartford Avenue East, Mendon.
Visiting hours will be Sunday, Jan. 13, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., at Buma-Sargeant Funeral Home, 42 Congress St., Mil-ford.
A Masonic service under the direction of the Alpha Lodge of Masons, AF & AM of Framing-ham will be conducted. Visit www.bumafuneralhome.com for the time of the Masonic service.
