During the French & Indian War he served in His Majesty’s Independent Company of Rangers from Worchester, Massachusetts. On 11 March 1757 he entered John Stark’s company as a private. He was promoted to sergeant on 1 May 1759 in Robert Rogers’ own company. Rogers described him as " a lusty, stout man 6 feet high.”
(RWS) Commissioned a Capt. 29 June 1775, commanded a company in the invasion of Canada, had an arm shot off by a cannon ball at the battle of Monmouth. In 1776 commanded a company in the 2nd New York regiment, and in 1778 served as major under Col. Goose Van Schaick.
Member of the NY Assembly 1782-3, 1786. Member of the Presbyterian Church.

In addition to the children listed under links, Joseph and Sarah were also parents to David (1762-1828), William (1764-1830), John (1766-1832/3) and Joseph Jr. (1775-1857) and his twin sister Susanna (1775-?).
