STURGEON, JAMES JEROME James Jerome Sturgeon was born in San Bernardino on April 14, 1924. James passed on February 4, 2009 of ALS. He was raised in St. Paul, MN. His parents were Virginia Margaret (Jean) Carr and Marius (Mike) Green. He was graduated from Mechanic Arts High School in 1942. In his youth, he was an altar boy for Cardinal Pacelli (Pope Pius XII) when the Cardinal visited St Paul. James also painted his name in the cupola at the top of St. Paul's Cathedral. James joined the United States Marine Corps in October of 1942 and was awarded the Purple Heart on Guam on July 21, 1944. James married Aune Nurmi in December, 1945. Aune predeceased James in 1981 of pancreatic cancer. Together, James and Aune raised nine children in La Mesa. Virginia (Sr. M. Gloria, SSND), William (Gerry), John (Pam), Kevin (deceased), Joan, Marty, David, Mary and Carol (Bob Speed). James was a devout Catholic. He was president of the St. Martin's Holy Name Society and he was a librarian for the parish. He was well read and ever ready to defend and discuss his faith. He was enthusiastic about youth baseball. He coached many championship teams. His focus was on his family which remains close knit today. James worked in the composing room at Arts and Crafts Press and other printers. He was a cancer survivor. In January, 2002, James ran off to Mexico with Norma Howse where they were married. The Lord blessed them with seven years of absolute happiness in their home in Lakeside. James is also survived by few remaining cousins, fourteen grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren, many stepchild-ren, stepgrandkids, and step-great-grandkids. Most of his friends his age have died. He was truly a standard bearer for the Greatest Generation. He will be remembered as a dear and loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. May his memory be a blessing. Mass will be celebrated at St. Martin's on Tuesday, February 17, 2009, at 10:30 a.m. Inurnment at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the School Sisters of Notre Dame, 320 East Ripa Avenue, St. Louis, MO, 63125-2897.
