Edward W. Gamble, July 17, 1914 - July 24, 2009, Mr. Edward W. Gamble, 95, of 418 W. 6th St., Rochester, passed away at 9:10 p.m. Friday, July 24, at Hickory Creek of Rochester.
Edward was born in Allenport, Pa., on July 17, 1914, the son of the late Robert and Lillie Craven Gamble. He had lived in the Rochester community for 70 years, coming from Hammond. Ed and Orlepha Pontious were married Nov. 25, 1939, in Hammond; she preceded him in death in 1957. He married Mary Louise Wolf on Aug. 14, 1965, in Rochester, and she preceded him in death in 1996. As one of nine children, Edward was a twin to his brother Edwin. He learned a solid work ethic early in life and was counted on to work and help his family out with chores. He was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps and a lifetime member of the UAW and Eagles. As an elder Ed assisted with preaching responsibilities for the reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints near Hibbard. In 1969 he retired as a machinist from Bendix Corp. Ed was a familiar face enjoying coffee and conversation in the earlier years at Maggie's, then at the Evergreen and most recently at Tweedle D's. As an inventor, Ed tinkered in his workshop creating domestic inventions or modifying and fabricating present ones to meet his family's needs for whatever challenges life presented. To relax he enjoyed watching television or simply observed the behaviors of his backyard friends, the birds and squirrels. Taking a ride through the countryside was also a favorite activity immensely enjoyed by Ed.
Ed is survived by two sons, Fredrick Lee Gamble and wife Linda, Pensacola, Fla., and John Gamble and wife Connie, Plymouth; two grandchildren, Carl Gamble and wife Terri, Brighton, Iowa, and Eric Gamble and wife Jeanette, Sebring, Fla.; six great-grandchildren, Evan, Ashley, Cody, Tyler, Alexandra, and Dakotah; one sister, Kathryn Houk and husband Robert, New Carlisle; and three nieces, Donna Jean Miller and husband Ronnie, Colleen Dillard, Rochester, and Jane Ann Hall, Plymouth. He was preceded in death by his parents; wives; two sons in infancy; and seven brothers and sisters, Edwin C., Elroy, Mary, Lillie, Rene, Betty, and Delbert.
A celebration of the life of Ed Gamble will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Good Family Funeral Home, 1200 W. 18th St., Rochester, with the Rev. Buck Padilla officiating. Friends may visit with the family from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday and one hour prior to the service in the funeral home. Interment will follow the services at the Leiters Ford Cemetery. Memorials may be made in his name to the American Cancer Society or United Ministries Food Pantry, Rochester, or Neighborhood Center, Plymouth.
