Husband of Patience, father of Polly (Mrs. Archibald Smith), grandfather of Senator Delazon Smith.

Served the Vermont militia in the Revolution; fought at Bunker Hill. "On one occasion, in the midst of battle, his superior officer having deserted the American standard and sought protection under the British banner, Capt. Briggs moved gallantly forward to the command, rallied the dismayed and panic-stricken men, charged the enemy boldly and courageously, and turned the tide of battle, achieving a victory at a moment when defeat seemed inevitable. At the close of the war, he returned to his home and resumed the peaceful pursuits of private life, covered with honorable scars, and content with the consciousness of duties well performed, and rejoicing in the blessings of an honorable peace and the unquestioned freedom of his country." (Shuck, Oscar. Representative and Leading Men of the Pacific. 1870, Bacon and Company. Online at www.archive.org)

From an 1860 family letter: "She (grandmother) was 91 years old when she died. I visited her grave and that of Grandfather on the Cone place & copied from their tombstones the following: "Joseph Briggs Esq died on the 29th day of March 1832 aged 82 years". "Patience widow of Joseph Briggs Esq died Oct 10th 1848 – aged 91 years."

The Briggs were near neighbors to Sarah Cone on the 1830 Pittsfield census. Their daughter Polly and her family lived at one time in New Berlin, Chenango County, NY.
