At the age of five years he came to this country with his parents, settling in Indiana, then they moved to Will county, Illinois, where they resided until 1868, when they moved to Bremer County, Iowa and purchased a farm.
On January 14, 1872, he was married to Miss Caroline Haase. This union was blessed with eleven children, three boys and eight girls. They resided on the home farm until two years ago, when they moved to Tripoli. He is survived by his wife, nine children, sixteen grandchildren, one half brother, Mr. Dietriech, and two half sisters who reside in Illinois. The living children are: Mrs. Otto Buls, Mrs. C. Westendorf, Mrs. W. Boechmann, Mrs. Fred Joens, Mrs. Henry Brase, Sophia, Anna, and Ida. Three sons died in infancy.
