Sergeant James Faraone was killed when his vehicle was rear-ended while he was stopped for a disabled vehicle on I-80.
Another vehicle which had been involved in an accident, stopped in one of the middle travel lanes of the highway. Sergeant Faraone, who was en route from the Salt Lake City Airport to police headquarters, stopped behind the vehicle in his unmarked cruiser and activated his rear emergency lights.
While he was stopped, a pickup truck rammed into the back of his cruiser at approximately 65 mph.
Sergeant Faraone was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The drivers of the pickup truck and the original vehicle were both injured.
Sergeant Faraone had been a member of the Salt Lake City Police Department for 25 years. He is survived by his wife, son, and daughter.

He was born July 23, 1953 in Benton Harbor, Michigan to Peter Faraone and Beverly Seel Faraone. He married Kelly Oliver September 7, 1978 in Sandy, Utah. Their family was later sealed for time and all eternity and their marriage solemnized September 20, 2001 in the Jordan River Temple.
Jim started his career with the Salt Lake Police Department in 1976. He served in various positions within the Department. He was currently serving as the liaison to the Airport Police. He would have graduated this spring with his Bachelor's Degree at the University of Utah. He loved his family. His children were the light of his life. Jim was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served honorably in many church callings and especially loved teaching his primary class. Jim loved coaching his daughter's softball teams and being involved in the community. He was looking forward to his son's return from his mission in Lima, Peru. He was very generous and always thinking of others before himself.
Jim is survived by his wife, Kelly and his son, Adam and daughter, Kaitlyn. Also survived by his parents and sister, Julie (John) Weber and brother, Jeff (Shelley) Faraone; also mother and father-in-law, Lynn and Juanita Oliver; brother and sister-in-law, Reid and Wendy Lewis and eight nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 22, 2001 at 12 noon at the Sandy, Utah Granite Stake Center, 2535 E. Newcastle Drive (9040 S.), where friends and family may call Friday from 6-8 p.m. and Saturday two hours prior to services. Interment at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park. Funeral Directors, Wasatch Lawn Mortuary. In lieu of flowers, a trust fund has been set up at the DWS Credit Union, 140 E. 300 S.
