James was living in Jacksonville, when he enlisted in the US Army 10 October 1966, at a recruiting office.
Arriving in Vietnam 12 April 1969, James was assigned to C Battery, 3rd Battalion, 82nd Artillery, 196th Infantry Brigade, Americal Division, USARV. C Battery was in the vicinity of An Lam (3) and 9 kilometers east of Que Son, when the battery was hit by hostile mortar fire and James died as a result of fragmentation wounds to the body. The Army had a total of 7 casualties.
Survived by his wife, Olive D Hurst and a son and a daughter and his mother; Ruby L Hurst, all of 2317 Hirsch Avenue, Jacksonville, Florida.
