Carlos was born a son of John Warren and Drucilla Young Nettles. Shortly after his birth, Drucilla died. Henry Archibald Rutland and Jane Pearson Rutland adopted Carlos and raised him as a Rutland. In the 1900 Census records for Henry Rutland, it clearly shows Carlos, spelt Carlis on the Census records, as adopted. The 1920 US Census also shows Carlos as adopted living in the house of Henry Rutland.

My mother told me this story as it was told to her by her father, Carlos. I have also talked with Mr. Luther Nettles and his sister Mrs. Frances Nettles Whisenhunt, both living in the Pine Hill area, and they know the story about Carlos.
