During the Civil War he served in the 25th Indiana Infantry, Company F. He was mustered into service on August 19, 1861. He was later granted a pension for disease of the throat in May 1881 at Mt. Vernon (Certificate #187,800).
Following the War, James was a farmer in Black Township.
James married Lydia Jane Knight on September 18, 1864 in Posey County and she gave birth to 12 children on their farm before she died of postpartum hemorrhage following the birth of twins in the summer of 1885.
About 1886, James married his second wife, Benann Reed. Together, they had 9 children.
