In 1848, Christian Morehart, the owner of Rock Mill purchased 1.8 acres of land spanning the Hocking River just a short distance downstream from his mill. It appears that he purchased this small parcel so that he could obtain water rights that would restrict his neighbor's mill pond from extending upstream beyond the Bloom/Greenfield Township line. This was necessary to allow him to install a water wheel on his newly constructed mill.
The deed identified one corner of the property as being on the township line at "…a mark made upon the sand rock on the north side of Hock Hocking river." And another corner being "… down along the north side of the said river one chain and 16 ½ links at a cross mark."
