Obit: James Rex Buck was born November 24, 1911, the son of Edward and Mary (Howell) Buck. He died Monday, November 2, 1998, at the Denison Care Center, Denison, Iowa, at the age of 86. Jim was born in Carthage, Missouri, where he lived with his family. He received his formal education in a rural school near his home in Missouri. On May 26, 1934, Jim married Alberta Thompson in Woodbine, Iowa. The couple settled on a farm in the Dow City area and were blessed with four children. In 1954, they moved to Missouri where they lived for ten years, before returning to the Dow City area in 1964. Jim also worked in a uranium mine in Northern Arkansas. Jim was a member of the Odd Fellows. He was a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather. He loved working in his garden, where he raised tomatoes, strawberries, and potatoes, included a seven pound sweet potato. Jim was especially proud of his beautiful rose garden, where nobody else was allowed. In his leisure time he enjoyed coon hunting and fishing. He was preceded by his parents; one son, James Leland; one daughter, Naomi Dee; four brothers, Homer, Bill, Ebb and Virgil; and four sisters, Lois, Ruby, Faye and Marie. Survivors include his wife, Alberta of Dow City; one son, Gary Buck and his wife, Hazel, of Dow City; one daughter, Nancy Thiede and her husband, Larry, of Belleville, Kansas; one daughter-in-law, Delaine Buck of Colorado Springs, Colorado; seven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., November 5, 1998, at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison with Elder Robert Custer officiating. Pallbearers included Curtis Thompson, David Lamb, Rick Wilton, Jeremy Thiede, James Lamb, and Bill Billings. Interment was in the Dow City Cemetery under direction of Huebner Funeral Service.
