BELLEVILLE — Martin E. Await, 72, Belleville, died Wednesday, May 13, 1998, at Salina Regional Health Center.
Mr. Await was born Dec. 10, 1925, at Scandia and was a lifelong resident of the Belleville area. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was a police officer for 33 years, Belleville chief of police and after retirement worked for Stone Construction. He was a member of the Kansas and National Chief of police Association; and Veterans Foreign Wars and American Legion, both of Belleville.
Survivors include his wife, Violet of Belleville; two daughters, Sharon Huffman of Clay Center and LaDona Racette of Mineral, Va.; his mother, Nellie Await of Scandia; two sisters, Bernadean Jeardoe of Concordia and Ardith Thomas of Chester, Neb.; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Tibbetts-Fischer Chapel, Belleville, Randy Paugh officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, Norway, with military rites.
Memorials may be made to the Kansas Heart Association or Diabetes Foundation. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home, 1104 20th, Belleville 66935.
