Ms. Carr, 106, died of heart failure Sunday, August 2, 2009 at Golden Age Nursing Home.
She was born in Greenwood on December 14, 1902 to William Isaac and Katie Wheeler Carr. She was a graduate of Greenwood High School and Draughons Business College. She was a member of First United Methodist Church and a faithful member of the Early Settlers Club. She worked at the Greenwood Army Air Base during World War II and was one of the last to leave. She worked at the Welfare Department in charge of issuing the first commodities, then the first food stamps, and also was the first lady to be appointed bailiff at the Leflore County Courthouse.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at Wilson & Knight Funeral Home.
