After moving to St. Augustine in 1942, Jim graduated from Ketterlinus High School, Later, he graduated from The Southern College of Optometry, Memphis, Tenn., with Degree " Doctor of Optometry. " He interned with Dr. John J. Daly, St. Augustine and passed the Florida State Board. Then he entered the U.S. Air Force as an aviation cadet and was selected to fly jet fighters. After a year, he was commissioned as an optometry officer and was stationed in Texas, Florida, Wasington, D.C.,London, England and Wiesbaden, Germany. He was active in optometric groups from the beginning. First, as president of the Florida Club in Optometry School and later as a member of the Florida Optometric Association and Fellow in the American Academy of Optometry, President of the Armed Forces Optometric Society. His organizational abilities demostrated the following accomplishments: Fellow Emeritus of the America Academy of Optometry, Air Force member of the Tri- service Medical Material Board, associate Chief for Optometry of the Biomedical Science Corp. for Headquarters Command of Air Force Surgeon - General, and co-chairman of the National Academy of Opticianry, Commission of Accreditation of Oppticianry Schools.
After his retirement from the Air Force as, He was appointed Chairman of the Vision Care Technology Program at Miami-Dade College in Miami. Later, he progressed to full professor and Dean of Allied Health Tecnologies. After this retirement, he practiced optometry in Miami, West Plam Beach and Jacksonville. In 1992, he returned to St. Augustine to enjoy his hobbies of sailing, biking and reading.

James Edward Hartley, 74, of St. Augustine, passed away Nov. 17, 2005 at his home. He was born in Daytona Beach Halifax Hospital on November 28, 1930, the son of James Leland and May B. Fulmer Hartley. He was predeceased by his parents and daughter, Jamie Lee. Survived by his children: Deborah Dee and Linda Joy and their Spouses, Dr. J. Edward, his wife and children. Grave side services will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, November 22, 2005 at St Augustine Memorial Park. Following the services, friends are invited to join his daughters, son and their families for a " Celebration of his Life " at the " Cracker Shack. " His thoughts on death were: " What a Caterpillar calls the end of life, wise men call a butterfly. To is a beautiful way to remember his passing. Flowers are respectfully declined, those wishing may make make contributions in his memory to your favorite charity.
