He moved to Merced in 1945 having married Ethel Lewis whose family had lived in Merced from 1934. They had been married for sixty one years when she passed away in October 2002.

Herman was active in many Merced community activities.

Throughout his life he enjoyed working with young people and helping them develop into responsible members of the community. In the early 1950?s he co-founded the Merced Boys Club, one of the earliest local youth programs that took underprivileged young people camping in Yosemite National Park to experience the joys of nature. He taught swimming and diving at the 17th Street Pool to any kids that wanted to learn. He served as the president of the Merced chapter of the B?nai Brith in 1947 and was a life long supporter of the Jewish community. When he was 52 years old he began a forty year love/hate relationship with the game of golf. He truly enjoyed his membership in the Merced Golf and County Club and was please to served as president of the Seniors group in 1980. Herman owned and operated Valley Furniture on 17th Street during the 1940?s and 1950?s. He specialized in selling baby furniture to young families and enjoyed helping people get a star as new parents. Later, he worked for many years in the furniture department of Montgomery Wards and at local furniture stores

As much as he enjoyed his outside activities and work, he loved his family more. Herman is survived by a son Melvyn and his wife Barbara of Foster City; a son David and friend Marie Polzin of Fresno; a daughter Linda and her husband Mike Reed of Merced. He will be greatly missed by his grandchildren Molly Ann of San Francisco; Jeff and his wife Amy of Alexandria, VA; Shayna and her husband Mike Hicks of Rocklin; Jenifer Reed of Merced, Matthew Reed of Merced; and Lisa Minton of Merced and Kitty Poo. He also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews, cousins and friends, who he always welcomed into his home and into his life.
