***My First Great Grandfather***

Samuel was the son of Samuel Dustin Lockwood, and Mary Snider Lockwood. He was born at Centerville, Addington County, Ontario, Canada. At the age of sixteen, he went to Kankakee, Illinois, where he remained four years and then went to Delavan, Minnesota, where he lived eight years. While at Delavan, he married Miss EMILY G. WHEELER, on 21 Oct, 1877. In 1878, they moved to Essex, Iowa, where they lived seven years, and in 1884, they moved to Hubbell, Nebraska, where they remained.

-from the obituary for Samuel Lockwood. Hebron Register, Nebraska, July 26, 1912:

"S. A. Lockwood died Thursday morning after a lingering sickness of several weeks' duration.

Mr. Lockwood was one of the prominent business men of Hubbell. He came here in 1884 and entered the drug store conducted by his brother, S. W. When his brother died several years ago, Mr. Lockwood purchased the stock and continued in the business until his death.

He was a good citizen and was ever ready to do his part in any enterprise for the benefit of the town. He served several years as a member of the school board and was greatly interested in the upbuilding if a good school in the town. He became a Mason shortly after coming here and was an ardent and staunch member of the order.

Mr. Lockwood leaves a wife, five children, two brothers and three sisters to mourn his loss.

The funeral was held Friday afternoon conducted by Hubbell Lodge No. 92, A. F. & A. M. - Hubbell Standard."

On the 1880 Census, Samuel is found with his wife Emily G., and daughter Ina, in Essex, Page County, IA. He buys and sells boxes.

No census for 1890.

On the 1900 Census, Samuel is found in Hubbell, Thayer County, NE, with his wife Emily, and daugher Ina, son Ned E., son Bert A., daughter Victoria D., and son Roy E. He is a druggist.

On the 1910 Census, Samuel is found in Hubbell, Thayer County, NE, with his wife Emily, and daughter Ina, and, son Roy. He is a druggist.

On the 1920 Census, Emily, a widow, is found in Hubbell, Thayer County, NE, and daughter Ina, and, son Roy. Living nearby is Samuel's sister Samantha Jane Benjamin, her daughter Ida J., and grandson Roland Edwards.

On the 1930 Census, Emily is found in Hubbell, Thayer County, NE, living with her son Roy, and, daughter Ina. Samantha Jane Benjamin is living nearby with her daughter Ida J.

Samuel was the proprietor of Lockwood Drugs in Hubbell.

In the Nebraska State Gazetteer and Business Directory, vol. XVI, for 1917, Thayer County, there appears the line: "Lockwood Saml A (est of) Anna Lockwood mngr patent medicine."

To this union, 5 children were born: INA, NED, BERT, VICTORIA, and, ROY.
