Howe, L. Donald
PROCTOR, Vt. - L. Donald Howe died Saturday, Aug. 27, 2005, peacefully with his wife, daughter and close friend by his side, at the Rutland Regional Medical Center.
He was born on Sept. 6, 1923, in Fortsville, N.Y., the son of Elmer P. and Mary (VanDusen) Howe.
He was a graduate of South Glens Falls High School Class of 1941.
Upon graduation, he went to work for the Grand Union Company before joining the U.S. Army during World War II and served in the European Theatre.
Following his discharge, he became manager of the Proctor Grand Union. He also worked for Wilson Sports in Rutland, the Proctor Creamery and was custodian of the Proctor Elementary School where he loved the children and enjoyed the adults whom he worked with. Upon retirement, he began reading two to three books weekly, something he'd never found the time to do before.
Don married Helen Macek on May 28, 1949. They purchased their home in 1958 and he developed his own long-range remodeling plan and carried this out himself.
Donald volunteered his time and energy for a wide variety of projects at the Union Church of Proctor. He was a member of Sutherland Falls Free and Accepted Masons Masonic Lodge 108 in Proctor and served as master for many years.
He was a lifelong woodworker, hunter, fisherman and skier.
He is survived by his wife, Helen, and their daughter, Donna, both of Proctor; two sisters, Anna Abare and Geraldine Stanton of South Glens Falls; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents and a brother, David Howe.
There will be no calling hours.
A memorial service was held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 30 at the Union Church of Proctor.
