In 1908 the Applegate family moved to 62 Centre Street, Haddonfield, NJ and Edward's sister Anna May Applegate was born November 18, 1908. In 1911 the Applegate family moved to 76 Tanner Street, Haddonfield, NJ and Edward's brother Samuel Levi Applegate was born on March 14, 1911. Later in 1911 the family moved to 84 Tanner Street, Haddonfield, NJ where another sister Sara Elizabeth Applegate was born December 24, 1912. In the spring of 1912 the Applegate family bought and moved 24 Wilkins Avenue along with Newlin's brothers Alvan and Harry Applegate. They lived at 17, 20, and 24 Wilkins Avenue. He learned the carpenter trade working on the many houses being built in Haddonfield when the tools were not powered by electric. He became a master carpenter at a young age and by 1950 had his own building company of large house tracks in Haddonfield, Audubon, Barrington, Cinaminson, NJ and Chester, PA.

1926-27 he met his future wife Sarah Zimmerman while fishing with his father in Tuckerton, NJ. Edward's parents rented a summer house and kept a boat on the Tuckerton Creek next to the Zimmermans on Sloop Landing Road, Tuckerton, NJ. Sarah Zimmerman was still in school when they met, so they dated until she finished school and were going to get married. In 1929 the stock market crashed and the Great Depression started and they didn't get married until January 1, 1934. It was a seven year courtship. Also Edward was seven years older than Sarah. When they married Edward was 27 years old and Sarah was 20 years old.
