He married Elizabeth Jane Steever December 31, 1869, in Washington DC with the Rev Samuel Shannon, a Methodist minister officiating. He fathered John Edgar (b. 05/02/74), Jessie May (b. 05/07/76), Daisy Edith (b. 01/18/78), Margaret Rebecca (b. 08/15/80), Harvey Simeon (b. 08/19/82), Bessie Wilhelmina (b. 09/15/84 - married a Warner), Samuel Vincent (b. 05/19/87), and Helen Elizabeth (b. 08/24/89 - married a Swope). After 50 years of marriage, he deserted Elizabeth, claiming she and a son were mistreating him, and moved in with his daugher Bessie, where he remained until his death from pneumonia. After Samuel's death, Elizabeth recanted the desertion charge and now claimed they had been too infirm to live on their own. However, the fact that Bessie was the only member of the family to attend her father's funeral indicates a strong familial rift.
During his pension process, Samuel first reported a birth year of 1840 but then changed his mind, blaming the error on his sister for altering their birth dates in the family bible.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg July 16, 1861, and mustered into federal service at Washington DC July 27 as a private with Co. D, 7th Pennsylvania Reserves (36th Pennsylvania Infantry). Promoted to corporal, date unknown. Hospitalized April 28, 1864, and honorably discharged June 16, 1864, at Philadelphia.
He became a member of Harrisburg's Post No. 58, G.A.R. and died at his daughter Bessie's home in Harrisburg. Elizabeth died at daughter Helen's home April 19, 1921. (Courtesy Dennis Brandt). Pennsylvania Death Certificates 1906-1963: Dauphin County, Harrisburg # 5162
