Don attended schools in Rapid City, graduating from Rapid City High School in 1963. He then joined the South Dakota Army National Guard in 1966, with an honorable discharge in 1972.
Don joined the Rapid City Fire Department in 1965, and retired in 2000, after 35 years of service. While on the Fire Department, he served on the KATHARSIS Team for several years. Also, while serving the Fire Department, Don worked fulltime at Herberger's Department Store for 19 years.
