Helen Augusta Beall was a direct descendant of Ninian Beall, who owned the Rock of Dumbarton, the tract of land upon which Georgetown was founded. She was born in Georgetown, the daughter of George Washington Beall and Mary Ann Davis Beall. He father was an officer of the old Georgetown government. Her uncle owned a farm where DuPont Circle is not located and she often recalled when her family would drive there from Georgetown for a day in the country. She recalled giving bread to Union soldiers during the Civil War as they passed through Georgetown. She attended the Seminary for Young Ladies and later taught piano to private students at the turn of the century. She lived at Thirty-third and O Streets Northwest until the death of her parents. Her hobbies included crossword puzzles, crocheting and tatting. She died at the age of 84 on Tuesday, June 15, 1948 at the home of her nieces in Glencarlyn, Virginia where she had lived since 1920. Survivors included her nieces, Constance and Hadassah Backus of Glencarlyn, Virginia and some cousins of Maryland. Services were held at the Birch Funeral Home at 3034 M Street Northwest. Interment was in Oak Hill Cemetery.
