Last Viceroy of New Spain. O'Donoju was a general in the Spanish Army and was named the jefe político superior of New Spain (Mexico) in 1821, meaning that he had the authority of a viceroy, but not the title. Upon his arrival in Veracruz he found that most of Mexico was in revolt and supported the rebel general Agustin de Iturbide. He began a correspondence with Iturbide and arranged to meet at Cordoba, where the two negotiated a treaty spelling out the conditions for Mexican independence in August, 1821. O'Donoju spent the next month convincing the commanders of the remaining Spanish forces to stand down and smoothing over the transfer of sovereignty to Mexico. He became part of the Provisional Ruling Junta with Iturbide and signed the Act of Independence of September 27, 1821, but died of pleurisy less than a month later and was interred with the honors due a Spanish viceroy.
