Howard T. Pennington, 86, of Quincy and formerly of Vandalia, died on Saturday, Aug. 8, 2009, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at Hohlt & File Funeral Home in Vandalia, with the Rev. Pete LeDuc officiating. Burial will be in Fairlawn Cemetery in Vandalia, with military rites accorded by Crawford-Hale American Legion Post No. 95 of Vandalia. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until time of services on Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials: Illinois Veterans' Home, Alzheimer's Unit B, Quincy.

Mr. Pennington was born on Jan. 29, 1923, in Vandalia, the son of Joseph and Mable Filer Pennington. He married Evelyn Mae Morell on Jan. 15, 1947, in Vandalia; she died on Sept. 24, 2006.

He was a former employee of Crane Packing in Vandalia, and he served in the Army during World War II. He was a member of Crown Point Community Church in Vandalia and Crawford-Hale American Legion Post No. 95 of Vandalia, and member and past commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 3862 of Vandalia.

He is survived by sons, Tom Pennington of Warsaw, Ind., and Philip Pennington and his wife Sheila of Ewing, Mo.; and grandson, Jarad Pennington.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; brothers, Donald, Herbert, Cleo, Lester and Clarence Pennington; and a grandson Sean Pennington.
